Biography
From the age of five, I wondered why if you were sick, a pill could make you healthy. Then the same pill, if taken when you are healthy will make you sick. It took me many years to discover that it might not be a pill that caused health to return.
When I was 5 or 6 years old my brother Jared had a severe case of strep throat and needed an antibiotic. After our visit to the peditrician, my mother took us directly to the pharmacy. We were there for only a few minutes before the pharmacist came around the counter and told Jared, “You need to take every pill in the bottle, or they won’t work. If you want to be nice, and strong, and healthy, you must take the pills.” I remember feeling cheated. I wanted to be strong and healthy too, but nobody was giving out pills for me. I immediately knew I wanted those pills.
Later that same evening, my parents found me in the bathroom trying to pry the lid off of my brother’s child proof pill bottle. When they asked what I thought I was doing, I responded that it was not fair that Jared got pills to make him strong, and I got nothing. My mom explained that since Jared was sick, the pills would make him well, but since I was well those same pills would make me sick. I asked how one pill could have two very different effects. They couldn’t give me an answer. I kept asking that same question throughout my life, until I finally got an answer that made sense.Pills don’t heal, only the body can heal itself.
Growing up, I never seriously considered any career other than as a medical doctor. However, in college I met a chiropractor who explained that the body is a self healing organism – all health is made from within, and although you can help with stitches, antibiotics, steroids, etc, only the body has the power to heal itself. While this theory is popular today, nearly 20 years ago at my first exposure, it sounded foreign. The body as a self healing organism? But it makes perfect sense. By aiding the body through natural means, and removing factors that inhibit normal function, overall health will improve. This improvement helps to get rid of sickness and disease.
Immediately I knew that as a chiropractor I could work with people desiring to be healthier. In contrast, a career in conventional medicine, managing people who were sick seemed less rewarding. My choice was simply. I was going to be a chiropractor. Our office philosophy is to treat every patient as a unique individual, providing a dedicated approach for the best results possible.
